These men didn't talk about their experience likely because they witnessed "massive carnage". We celebrate their bravery today, and of course they were heroes who did a necessary thing. But frankly, they were flying in massive sorties of hundreds of planes, to deliver bombs to kill thousands of civilians in Germany. Although it strategic bombing was probably important to win the war, it was perhaps something your father and my great uncle didn't feel "proud" of in the sense of wanting to talk about it. How can they be proud of killing people? I can't fully imagine what their mental state would have been after the way.
