Obituary
NEWMAN Charlotte Marie Charlotte Marie Newman of Valley Park Manor passed into the presence of her Lord on Sunday, September 7, 2008 at the age of 99 years.
The eldest of five, Mom was born June 4, 1909 to Joseph and Mabel (Smith) Sloane at their homestead west of Cayley, AB. The family moved within Alberta in her younger years so Mom attended school at Edmonton, Bawlf, Vulcan and Calgary before moving at age 14 to Winnipeg where she finished school and graduated from Normal School.
Mom and Dad, Harold Newman were married in Winnipeg June 1, 1932. They moved a number of times wherever Dad could get work until regular work on the CNR kept them in Transcona, Winnipeg, and finally in 1951 to Biggar, SK where Dad retired in 1971, and then in 1991 they moved to Red Deer to be near family [daughter Laura and her family].
Mom became a Christian at an early age, and her faith was reflected in how she lived her life, and raised her family. She was a caring wife, a devoted and loving Mother, grandmother, great grandmother and a dear and faithful friend. She loved her flower gardens, especially her morning glories and pansies. She was an accomplished seamstress, and in her empty nest years, taught sewing in the community. All during her life she had busy hands, knitting, tatting, embroidering, smocking, crocheting, playing the piano, and later in life tried her hand successfully at painting in oils and water color, paper tole, and many and varied other crafts. She was also an excellent cook and loved when her family came to visit so she could feed us well.
Marie leaves to mourn her children: David (Lois) Newman, Terrace BC, Loraine (Bob) Houston, Red Deer, and John (Laura) Newman, Naniamo BC; eight grandchildren, Ken (Wendy) Newman, Terrace, Heather (Mitchull) Pleshka, Terrace, Melody (Russ) Dawson, Prince George, Ann Morse, Vulcan, Rob Houston, Calgary, Laura Houston, Red Deer, Alicia Newman, Burnaby, Daniel Newman, Nanaimo; and six great grandchildren, Brooklyn Newman, Hanna and Joshua Pleshka, Alexandra and Samuel Dawson, and Emily Morse. She is also survived by a brother-in-law Walter Lint, Winnipeg. Mom was predeceased by her husband Harold (1993), four siblings, Cecil Sloane in infancy, Lloyd Sloane, Crystal Hay and Betty Lint, as well as grandson-in-law Jeremy Morse. She will be forever remembered in the hearts of her family and friends.
A Celebration of Marie's life will be held at Parkland Funeral Home and Crematorium, 6287 – 67A Street, Red Deer, AB on Saturday, September 13, 2008 at 1:30 p.m. Memorial Donations may be made to the DTHR Foundation for the Valley Park Manor Recreation fund, P.O.
