Eliza Snook

Eliza Snook (nee Humphrey) (1882 or 1883 - 18 April 1971) was an English emigrant to Thunder Bay.

Early life

Eliza Humphrey was born between 19 April 1882 and 18 April 1883 (since her obituary lists her age as 88 years on the date of her death, 18 April 1971), in Chelsea, England.

Her birth certificate says 20 October 1882.

Marriage and family

Eliza married Edward Langley Snook sometime before 1911. She and her husband followed her brother-in-law George Snook in immigrating to Canada in 1911. They moved directly to Port Arthur.

Death

Eliza died at 88 on 18 April 1971. At the time of her death she was living with her adult son Leonard, at 120 North High Street in the newly amalgamated town of Thunder Bay.

Eliza died just one year after the January 1970 amalgamation of Port Arthur and Fort William. Her obituary refers to her grandaughter Joan Johnstone as being from "Thunder Bay South", a term not commonly used today.

SNOOK - Mrs. Eliza Snook, age 88 years, of 120 N. High Street, died in Thunder Bay hospital, Sunday, April 18, 1971. A native of Chelsea, England, she had been a resident of Thunder Bay since 1911. She was an adherent of First Baptist Church, a member of the Baptist Women's Mission Circle, and formerly active in Choral groups. She is survived by one son Leonard at home, two daughters, Mrs. Doris Bryer, 436 Ambrose St., Irene, Mrs. James Craigh [sic], 6-309 N. Algoma St., three grandchildren, Joan, Mrs. Bruce Johnstone, 734 Mortimer St., Thunder Bay South, Susan, Mrs. John Wallace, Embro, Ont., Dr. Dan Bryer, London, Ont., (enroute), seven great grandchildren, one brother Alfred Humphrey, London, England, also nieces and nephews in Canada and England. She was predeceased by her husband Edward L. Snook in January 1952. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 21, 1971 at 10:30 a.m. in the Sargent and Son Funeral Chapel, 21 N. Court St., with Rev. John Griffiths of First Baptist Church officiating. Interment Riverside Cemetery. Flowers gratefully declined. Donations to the Ontario Heart Foundation would be greatly appreciated.
