Joan Beverley Johnstone (nee Bryer) (27 May 1933 - 15 December 2004) was a life-long resident of Thunder Bay, and one of the three children of Doris Suttie. Her maiden name (Bryer) comes from her mother's first husband.

Marriage and family

In 1951 she married Bruce Johnstone and bore him three daughters:

  • Patricia (Jamie) Lawson of Abbotsford, B.C. as of 2004
  • Wendy (Douglas) Ridley of Winnipeg, MB as of 2004
  • Carol (Jim) Walker of Thunder Bay as of 2004

Joan Beverley Johnstone

It is with such deep sorrow that the family announces the passing of Joan Johnstone after a lengthy illness on December 15, 2004, at the age of 71, with her girls by her side, at St. Joseph's Hospital.

Born May 27, 1933 she was a life-long resident of Thunder Bay.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughters Patricia (Jamie) Lawson of Abbotsford, B.C. , Wendy (Douglas) Ridley of Winnipeg, MB and Carol (Jim) Walker; her mother; Doris Suttie, brother Dan (Judy) Bryer of North Bay, ON. , and sister Susan (Dennis) Neave of Echo Bay, ON; grandchildren Sarah, Jonathon and Michael Lawson, Melanie (Cam) Hall, Alex, Autumn and Aaron Walker; great grandchildren Ethan, Emily and Elora and numerous nieces and nephews.

Predeceased by her husband Bruce Johnstone in 2002 and her father George Bryer in 1962. Joan married Bruce in 1951 and they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary July 2001.

She had a caring thoughtful and generous heart, quick wit and sense of humor. She was a talented and creative person which was demonstrated in her beautiful weaving, knitting and other numerous projects. She loved her family so much, and enjoyed being around them and always doing things for them, like her delicious meals during all the special birthdays and holidays. She enjoyed several years of country living raising a variety of animals. Her pets were very special to her.

A special thanks to her sister-in-law Martha Johnstone for all her time and compassion especially during Joan's hospital stay and to Susan Zerabny for all her help. Thank you to Dr. Watson, Dr. Mymko, Dr. Miller and the caring staff at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, 2A and the renal unit. A heartfelt thank you to the staff of St. Joseph's Hospice who made her last days comfortable, through their caring, compassionate and professional assistance.

At Joan's request, cremation has taken place. A celebration of Joan's life will be held on Monday Dec. 20 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph's Heritage Chapel, 63 Carrie Street with Rev. Joyce Hannaford officiating, reception and interment to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to The Arthritis Society (73 Cumberland St. N. P7A 4L8), The Kidney Foundation of Canada-Northwestern Chapter (#405-101 Syndicate Ave. N. P7C 3V4), or a charity of your choice.
