Catherine Elizabeth "Mary" Myles (nee Newman) (November 11, 1860 – April 14, 1946), was the wife of Adam A. Myles, of Gosfield North. She was the sister of controversial Winnipeg civil engineer William Newman.

Biography

Early Life

Catherine was born on November 11, 1860, in Tilbury West, Essex County, Ontario. She was the daughter of James Newman, who was born in England, and Mary Ann Elliott, who was born in Ireland. A lifelong resident of Canada, she was born prior to Canadian Confederation.

Family and Residence

She married Adam A. Myles (sometimes spelled Miles) and lived for the majority of her life on the Rochester and Gosfield North Townline in Essex County. Her occupation was listed as housework.

Although her legal name was Catherine Elizabeth, she was widely known within the family as "Mary." According to her relative David Harold Newman, she was consistently referred to as "Aunt Mary." The couple had several children, though family correspondence notes that "life was difficult for them."

Catherine was widowed around 1923, surviving her husband by approximately 23 years. Her daughter, Beatrice Cowans, resided in South Woodslee and served as the informant upon Catherine's death.

Death

Death Certificate, 1946

Catherine died 14 April 1946, at the age of 85, at her residence in Gosfield North. She had suffered a stroke (hemiplegia) two weeks prior, resulting from hypertension and arteriosclerosis. She was attended by Dr. S. Mullen of Woodslee during her final illness.

She was buried on 17 April 1946, in Lakeview Cemetery in Leamington, Ontario.
