Talk:Dolores Niskanen

In December 1952 she performed in Sault Saint Marie under her maiden name, Vuori, so she must have married sometime between 1952 and 1956.

This means her date of birth was likely something like 1937 at the latest.

On 10 March 1956 she performed a dance in "Port Wellerisa", Ontario (i.e. Port Weller, a neighbourhood in St Catherine's), under her married name, so this likely pushes her date of birth back to at least 1938.

Anne Fowler obituary condolences

Apparently Dolores also taught at the Heritage, and also did fashion show fundraisers:

Many condolences. For many years I attended aerobic classes with her by Dolores and also had the joy of participating in Dolores's fashion show fundraisers with her modelling clothes. Her and I have had many laughs over those years. She was such a fun and cheerful woman. Always enjoyed her company. Indeed she was a wonderful person and will be misses by many.

RIP Anne

Born 1927 · St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada Died March 29, 1986 · Toronto, Ontario, Canada

"Amy Bowring: Yeah, I did, actually. Because as we were looking, Grace was saying, ‘OK, what about early South Asian teachers?’ And I went back to Willy Blok Hanson, who’s really a complicated figure. And when I was reading [author Emily Pettet’s] writing, I realized that there were some things that I still had questions about. So I went in and started to dig through most of what we know about her because we don’t have her collection; we have the collection of one of her students named Garbut Roberts. And he did some really great notetaking and writing about that period. He has the sketches of a manuscript that he probably intended to publish at some point, but he passed away before he could. But he did a lot of writing about that period and learning South Asian dance forms from Willy Blok Hanson. [Hanson] grew up in Java, but she comes from a mixed Indigenous European background. She was there when the Japanese invaded; she was in an internment camp for a while. But she’s trained in Javanese and Balinese dance as well as bharatanatyam. She also spent time in Europe training in German expressionism, in modern dance. "

Questions

Why move from 46 Dunblaine Avenue (time of wedding) to 5 Dunblaine Avenue? (at the time of birth of son)?

Living in Don Mills at the time of her maternal grandfather's death in 1960. https://www.newspapers.com/image/737003604/?match=1

There have been two other Doloreses Niskanen in North America during the 20th century. Because the name Dolores was only popular during the 1930s, when it was the 25th-most-popular girls' name, the number of people with this quite rare name is unlikely to rise much further, since as of 2020 the name is not even in the top 2000 most popular names.

Some people having a very common name are difficult to observe, like a star that is very close to the sun (in terms of angular position) making it hard to study by astronomers because it is obscured by the bright light of the sun). In the same way, a person sharing the same name as a famous person is hard to search for without turning up a bunch of false positives.

What is Dolores' advice for how to keep rhythm?

Does she have any videos of her dancing?

Who was "Wayne"?? He looked like her son Keven!

After the November 1969 sudden closure of the health club, by 1971 she was working at the Vic Tanny Health Club: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vic_Tanny

Why move to Thunder Bay? Did you do it just after the 1972 dance season of your school (you advertised in the fall 1971 for students in St Catherine's at your linwell plaza Irish Club location). Did you go to Thunder Bay caused by your divorce? When were you separated? I guess before 1970 since you posted a greeting then. Your father died 1967. Your mother was still there in St Catherines. Your half-brother was in Thunder Bay? Maybe that's why you went?

You left in 2002 April. Because of Allan Paivo, presumably an ex-boyfriend from before you were married? You dated Allan before 1952? He was Mr. Canada! Must have been very handsome.

In October 2023, Dolores purchased a coat online from a Finnish store, after which she had some feedback.
