(Leith Dunick, tbnewswatch.com) THUNDER BAY -- An elderly local woman is unhurt after crashing her car through a bank window on Dawson Road.

Police say no one inside the TD Canada Trust at Country Fair Plaza was hurt Monday afternoon when the woman’s white Hyundai Sonata hopped a parking barrier and smashed through the plate glass window and brick front of the bank, narrowly missing at least one customer inside.

“I was pretty surprised,” said the witness, who did not want to give his name. “It was very close. I was five feet away. I’m pretty shaken up.”

Lee Vollum was standing a short distance away and said he was shocked to see the afternoon event unfold.

“I turned around, just to watch the parking lot a bit and I saw a woman in a Sonata pull into the parking space. She jumped forward once, sort of hopping over the barrier, then jumped forward again, going right into the front of the bank,” Vollum said.

Vollum quickly called 911 to report the incident and said it’s not something you see every day.

“It was a bit shocking,” he said.

The woman tried to get out of her car, but was told it might be wiser to stay put until emergency crews arrived.

“That glass was hanging down like guillotines,” Vollum said.

Thunder Bay Police Const. Gordon Snyder confirmed there were no injuries inside or out.

“There were people in the bank at the time who witnessed what happened and there were no injuries as a result. The driver is fine and she’s cooperative with police. We’re just waiting to have the vehicle towed out. There’s extensive damage to the bank.”

The bank remains closed until further notice, though the drive-though is still open.
