David Edward Newman, born (1947-01-04) 4 January 1947 (age 79), is an American physicist, and son of Jack Newman. He is the brother of Tom Newman and Janet Newman. (Not to be confused with David Harold Newman, his father's cousin.)

Early Life

David was born on Jan 4, 1947 in Lilybrook, West Virginia. He is trained as a physicist, and currently works in the business of patents, buying and selling them. He holds a number of patents himself. His daughters were born in Ann Arbor, Michigan. As of 2026 he lives in Poway, a suburb of San Diego, California.

Patents

David is a named inventor on numerous U.S. patents and patent applications, primarily co-invented with R. Kemp Massengill and assigned to Autonomous Roadway Intelligence, LLC. His patent work spans two main areas:

Vehicle collision avoidance and hazard mitigation

Several patents describe systems for avoiding highway collisions and minimizing harm when a collision is unavoidable. These include sensor-based detection of nearby vehicles, real-time traffic mapping using angle and distance measurements from multiple vehicles (merged via maximum likelihood estimation, optionally with AI assistance), and automatic sequences of acceleration, deceleration, and steering interventions. Post-collision strategies to prevent secondary collisions are also covered.

  • US9701307B1 — Systems and methods for hazard mitigation
  • US10507829B2 — Systems and methods for hazard mitigation (continuation)

5G and 6G wireless communications

A large body of patent applications addresses next-generation wireless network challenges, including:

  • Beam alignment — Resource-efficient methods for base stations to help user devices align directional transmission and reception beams, including sequential signal scanning and interpolation techniques.
  • Message fault correction — Methods for reconstructing correct messages from two corrupted copies by comparing modulation quality of individual resource elements, optionally using AI models.
  • IoT and device security — Restricted communication links for reduced-capability IoT devices that minimize attack surfaces by using pre-configured formats with no excess capability.
  • Device discovery — "Hailing" procedures for new users to locate and join nearby base stations more quickly, with applications to emergency situations such as imminent traffic collisions.
  • Geolocation signaling — Systems for base stations and user devices to exchange location information for improved beam targeting and reduced energy consumption.
  • Demodulation references — Short-form references enabling low-cost receivers to demodulate wireless messages while avoiding complex 5G/6G protocols.

Other

Additional patent filings cover multimodal sensing systems for agricultural machines, remote control retrofit devices using Hall-effect sensors, and scalable vehicle chassis platforms.

Marriages and Family

David married his first wife Leslie Tolson in July, 1970. They later divorced (date unknown). They had 2 daughters:

David married his second wife, whose country of origin was India, sometime before 2006. They had a wedding in India but are not together as of 2007.
