Obituary

Mrs. Jane "Jean" Achtenberg, 88 years, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 29, 2005 at Bethammi Nursing Home.

Born in Scotland to Agnes and Robert Hamilton, she was the eighth of nine children. Her chosen profession was to be a nurse and she received her nursing diploma at Stobhill Hospital in Glasgow in 1942. She served with the British army in India during the war.

Jean immigrated to Canada with her husband and family in 1955 and eventually they settled in Thunder Bay. She was able to continue her nursing career working many years at Dawson Court.

In 1966 she married Edward Achtenberg and together they shared many happy years at "Janeddy", their camp at Dog Lake. Jean was a long time member of Wesley United Church and active with the UCW Lydia Group. Her church family were amongst her best friends and sharing her faith with them was always a source of comfort and strength. Jean meticulously recorded her life story daily on her calendars and in journals. She faithfully remembered every significant event and kept in touch with family and friends by writing cards and letters. Jean's delightful Scottish accent often revealed a rich and intriguing life of adventure at home and abroad. Her greatest love was her children and grandchildren and she always looked forward to their visits.
