Obituary for Mr. Alan Thomas SUMNER Mr. Alan Thomas Sumner, of South Hill Street, passed away unexpectedly but peacefully at home following the celebration of his 81st birthday on Wednesday evening, January 7, 2004.

Born in Fort Erie Ontario, he graduated from the A-Flight Training Course RCAF in July 1942; he also graduated from the Provincial Institute of Mining in Hailibury in 1947; and earned the designation Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario in 1970. In 1980 he was awarded the Order of the Sons of Martha from the Professional Engineers Of Ontario. A life member of C.I.M.M., he worked all over Canada, including Lyn Lake, Manitoba, B.C., Quebec, Steeprock Iron Mine in Atikokan, and Noranda Mines in Manitouwadge, before retiring to Thunder Bay where he worked with his son Scott at North of Superior Publishing.

Alan was an avid curler and golfer, beginning his golf career as a caddy at the age of 11 at the Cherry Hill Golf Course in Fort Erie. He also helped build the Manitouwadge Golf Course and was one of the founders of the EZY duzit Curling League at the Thunder Bay Country Club. A longtime member of the Fort William Country Club, he shot an 83 while golfing with his son Scott last summer at the age of 80. Recently he had developed an interest in shooting pool and working with computers. He was also a member of Shuniah Lodge #287 A.F. & A.M. GRC.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Barbara; son Scott of Thunder Bay; daughter Sandra and husband Peter and granddaughter Alisa � all of Toronto (enroute); sister Alice McDonald of Burlington, Ont.; numerous nieces and nephews. Alan was predeceased by his parents, and one sister Aileen.

Funeral services for Alan Sumner will be held on Monday, January 12, 2004 with family and friends assembling in St. Michael and All Angels Anglican Church for Funeral Services at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Peter Smyth officiating. Interment to follow in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation for friends will be on Sunday evening after 6:00 pm with a Masonic Service at 7:00 pm in the EVEREST FUNERAL CHAPEL, 299 Waverley Street at Algoma. If friends so desire, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.
